First City Monument Bank and Mastercard have launched AgroPass, a digital platform designed to improve smallholder farmers’ access to finance, agricultural markets and essential services across Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at addressing some of the challenges faced by farmers, particularly difficulties in obtaining financing, accessing quality agricultural inputs and connecting with buyers.

The platform was developed by Mastercard and combines its technology capabilities with FCMB’s banking network and presence in farming communities.

AgroPass is designed to connect farmers with input suppliers, buyers, lenders, agribusinesses and other participants across the agricultural value chain.

The launch represents another effort by financial institutions and technology companies to use digital solutions to improve agricultural activities and strengthen financial inclusion.

Agriculture remains an important part of Nigeria’s economy, supporting employment, food production and commercial activities across rural communities.

However, many smallholder farmers continue to face financial and operational barriers that limit their ability to expand production.

How AgroPass Is Expected to Work

AgroPass is designed to create digital connections between farmers and organisations that provide services across the agricultural sector.

Through the platform, farmers are expected to gain improved access to financing opportunities, agricultural inputs, potential buyers and relevant services.

Input suppliers are important participants because farmers require items such as seeds, fertilisers and other production materials to cultivate crops successfully.

Buyers and processors also play an important role because farmers need reliable markets where they can sell their produce.

By connecting these participants through a digital platform, AgroPass aims to improve visibility and efficiency across agricultural transactions.

The initiative also seeks to strengthen farmers’ ability to participate in formal financial services.

Access to reliable information and commercial relationships can help farmers make better business decisions and improve their opportunities for growth.

FCMB Highlights Its Agricultural Financing Activities

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos, FCMB Managing Director Yemisi Edun, represented by Executive Director, Wholesale Banking, Obaro Odeghe, explained the importance of providing farmers with support beyond traditional lending.

Edun said helping farmers required connections to finance, markets, technology, knowledge and opportunities.

She described AgroPass as a platform designed to support farmers in becoming more productive, resilient and commercially successful.

She also disclosed that FCMB provided more than ₦364.6bn, equivalent to $236m, in financing to Nigeria’s agricultural sector in the previous year.

According to her, the bank supported more than 196,000 smallholder farmers nationwide.

Nearly half of the beneficiaries were women and young people.

These figures highlight the bank’s involvement in agricultural financing and its efforts to support participants across the sector.

Mastercard Emphasises Digital Inclusion

Mastercard also highlighted the importance of connecting smallholder farmers to financial services and commercial opportunities.

The company’s Executive Vice-President for Growth Segments, Tara Nathan, said smallholder farmers play an important role in food systems, rural livelihoods and economic development.

However, many remain disconnected from services that could help them improve productivity and business performance.

She explained that AgroPass was designed to bridge some of these gaps by connecting farmers to financial services, suppliers, buyers and digital tools.

The partnership with FCMB is intended to support a more connected agricultural ecosystem.

Digital platforms can help reduce information gaps and improve access to services, particularly when farmers operate in communities where traditional financial and commercial services may be limited.

Agriculture and Nigeria’s Economic Development

Agriculture remains an important sector for Nigeria because it supports food supply, employment and income generation.

Smallholder farmers account for a significant part of agricultural production and play an important role in supplying local markets.

However, limited access to finance can prevent farmers from purchasing necessary inputs, adopting improved farming methods or expanding their operations.

The inability to access reliable markets can also expose farmers to losses, particularly when they struggle to sell harvested produce at reasonable prices.

Initiatives that connect farmers with lenders, buyers and suppliers can help address some of these challenges.

AgroPass is therefore positioned as a digital solution that seeks to strengthen relationships across the agricultural value chain.

Supporting Food Security and Rural Businesses

Improving agricultural financing is important for food security because farmers need the resources to maintain and expand production.

When farmers have access to appropriate financing and reliable markets, they may be better positioned to invest in their businesses.

Technology can also improve communication between agricultural producers and other industry participants.

However, the success of AgroPass will depend on how effectively farmers can access and use the platform.

Digital literacy, network availability, affordability and awareness will remain important considerations, particularly in rural communities.

The partnership between FCMB and Mastercard represents an effort to address agricultural financing through technology and collaboration.

As the platform develops, its ability to deliver practical benefits to farmers will be an important measure of its success.
