Nigeria’s women’s football champions, Edo Queens, have lost their opportunity to participate in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League after suffering a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the resumed WAFU Zone B qualifying final.

The match, played in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, October 29, ended in disappointment for the Nigerian club following a qualification dispute that resulted in the Confederation of African Football ordering the teams to complete extra time from their earlier encounter.

Ampem Darkoa secured victory through a decisive goal from Afishata Mohammed in the 92nd minute, ending Edo Queens’ hopes of representing the WAFU Zone B region at the continental competition.

The result was particularly disappointing for Edo Queens because the Nigerian side had initially celebrated qualification after winning the original final through a penalty shootout.

How the Qualification Dispute Began

The controversy originated from the WAFU Zone B final played between both clubs on September 5 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The original encounter ended 2-2 after regulation time.

Edo Queens subsequently won the penalty shootout and were declared winners, appearing to have secured their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

However, Ampem Darkoa challenged the handling of the match, arguing that the competition regulations required the teams to play 30 minutes of extra time before proceeding to penalties.

The appeal raised questions about the procedure followed by the match officials during the original encounter.

CAF reviewed the matter and upheld the appeal, ruling that the required extra time had not been played.

The governing body therefore directed that the teams return to the field to complete the omitted extra-time period.

The score was restored to 2-2, and the teams were required to resume the contest from the beginning of extra time.

Ampem Darkoa Secure Qualification

The resumed contest took place in Cairo on Thursday.

Both teams entered the additional period knowing that the outcome would determine which club advanced to the continental tournament.

Ampem Darkoa eventually gained the advantage when Mohammed scored in the 92nd minute.

The goal proved decisive, giving the Ghanaian side a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Edo Queens attempted to find an equaliser but could not overcome the Ghanaian defence before the final whistle.

The victory secured Ampem Darkoa’s qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

According to CAF, the Ghanaian champions will join the other qualified teams in Egypt for the continental tournament scheduled to run from November 1 to 15.

A Major Setback for Edo Queens

The defeat represents a significant disappointment for Edo Queens and Nigerian women’s football.

The club had built its reputation through domestic performances and its previous participation in the continental competition.

Edo Queens reached the semi-finals during their debut appearance in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

That achievement helped raise the club’s profile and demonstrated the competitiveness of Nigerian women’s football.

Missing the 2026 edition therefore means the team will lose another opportunity to compete against leading women’s clubs from across Africa.

It also removes the possibility of gaining further international experience during the tournament.

Nevertheless, the club’s performance in the original qualifying final demonstrated its ability to compete against strong opponents.

The circumstances surrounding the replay also highlight the importance of strict compliance with competition regulations.

Lessons for African Women’s Football

The controversy has drawn attention to the importance of match administration and the consistent application of competition rules.

Football competitions depend on clear regulations to ensure that teams are treated fairly and that results are determined through recognised procedures.

The situation also demonstrates how administrative decisions can significantly affect sporting outcomes.

For clubs participating in regional and continental competitions, understanding the rules governing extra time, penalties and appeals is essential.

The 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League will proceed without Edo Queens, while Ampem Darkoa will represent Ghana at the tournament.

For the Nigerian champions, attention will now turn towards reviewing the campaign and preparing for future domestic and international opportunities.
