All passengers who sustained injuries in the June 8 train accident on the Warri–Itakpe rail route have been treated and discharged from medical facilities, according to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, confirmed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, noting that all equipment involved in the incident had also been fully recovered.

However, he disclosed that one NRC staff member who suffered serious injuries remains under specialist medical care.

The accident occurred at about 4:17 p.m. near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Agbor, Delta State, when four coaches of the train capsized. The train had departed Itakpe Station at noon on a scheduled service to Ujevwu, Warri.

The train was carrying 442 passengers along with 40 operational personnel, including train crew, security operatives, medical staff, cleaners, caterers and other support personnel.

Five fatalities were recorded in the incident, while injured passengers were immediately evacuated to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities for emergency treatment.

Dr Opeifa said all passengers and crew members involved in the incident had now been fully accounted for.

He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the corporation would continue to support them during the period of loss and recovery.

The NRC boss also commended the management and medical teams of General Hospital Owa Oyibu, Owa Alero Hospital and Central Hospital, Agbor, for their swift response and professional handling of the injured victims.

According to him, their intervention played a critical role in stabilising patients and ensuring effective emergency care following the accident.

He further disclosed that the corporation has set up a medical and victim support committee to engage with affected families and coordinate post-incident assistance.

The committee has already visited injured passengers and families of deceased victims in Agbor, Asaba and Ugbolu in Delta State, and is expected to extend its outreach to Warri to condole with additional affected families.

Dr Opeifa urged members of the public seeking information about passengers, lost property or medical follow-up to contact the NRC Incident Desk through dedicated phone lines.

He added that rail track restoration work had commenced following the completion of rescue operations and equipment recovery.

The NRC reiterated its commitment to cooperating with relevant authorities, implementing safety recommendations from ongoing investigations and strengthening measures to improve railway safety, reliability and operational sustainability across the country.
