A delegation of German parliamentarians is visiting Nigeria to assess development priorities and explore opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation between both countries.

The delegation is led by Dr Wolfgang Stefinger, a member of the German Bundestag and chairman of its Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. The visit is aimed at deepening discussions on shared development priorities and identifying areas where Germany and Nigeria can expand their partnership.

The programme includes engagements with Nigerian government officials, members of the National Assembly, representatives of development institutions and other stakeholders.

Germany and Nigeria have maintained development and diplomatic relations covering areas such as economic growth, education, technical training, investment and institutional cooperation. The latest visit provides an opportunity for representatives of both countries to review existing partnerships and discuss areas where cooperation can be strengthened.

Speaking at a reception organised for the visiting delegation, German Consul General Daniel Krull said the visit offered an opportunity to deepen relations and explore additional areas of collaboration.

Krull disclosed that Germany’s development cooperation with Nigeria was valued at more than €700 million. The figure highlights the scale of development engagement between the two countries and the importance attached to their partnership.

The discussions are expected to cover economic cooperation, investment opportunities, education and skills development. These areas are particularly important as Nigeria seeks to expand its productive capacity, improve the skills of its workforce and attract investment into key sectors.

For Nigeria, stronger economic cooperation with Germany could provide opportunities for knowledge exchange, technical support and partnerships involving businesses and institutions. Germany is known for its industrial and technical training systems, making skills development a relevant area of engagement between both countries.

Education and vocational training are also important because businesses require workers with the technical knowledge and practical abilities needed to operate in an increasingly competitive economy.

Cooperation in these areas could support efforts to improve training opportunities and strengthen the connection between education and employment.

The German parliamentary delegation’s programme also includes discussions with representatives of Nigeria’s National Assembly and government institutions. Engagement with lawmakers is expected to provide an opportunity to discuss policy priorities and the role of parliamentary cooperation in supporting development relations.

The delegation’s visit is also linked to Germany’s broader development cooperation activities in Nigeria. According to information published by the German Bundestag, the parliamentary committee’s programme includes visits and discussions involving development projects, economic partnerships and educational initiatives.

Among the areas highlighted in the programme are cooperation between German and Nigerian companies, digital and technological training, and development challenges in Lagos.

The delegation is also expected to engage with representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reflecting the wider regional dimension of Germany’s relationship with Nigeria.

Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s major economies makes it an important partner for international development and investment discussions. Its large population, business environment and regional influence provide opportunities for cooperation, while challenges relating to infrastructure, employment and skills development remain important issues for policymakers.

For Germany, engagement with Nigeria offers a platform to strengthen its development partnerships and explore opportunities for closer collaboration with Nigerian institutions and businesses.

However, the value of the visit will depend on how discussions translate into practical programmes, investment commitments and long-term partnerships. Diplomatic engagements can create opportunities, but sustained cooperation requires clear priorities, effective implementation and participation from relevant public and private-sector institutions.

The €700 million development cooperation figure disclosed by the German Consul General provides an indication of the existing relationship. The current visit is expected to help both countries examine how their partnership can respond to changing economic and development needs.

As the delegation continues its engagements in Nigeria, discussions on investment, education, vocational training and regional cooperation are expected to remain central to efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries.
