Barcelona has received permission from Spain midfielder Rodri to begin negotiations with Manchester City over a potential transfer, a source from the La Liga champions told AFP on Thursday.
“Today Barcelona is closer to being able to consider this transfer than yesterday. We have now secured the player’s agreement to open negotiations with Manchester City,” the source said, confirming reports from Spanish media.
The development could disrupt Real Madrid’s reported interest in the 30-year-old midfielder, as the club continues efforts to strengthen its squad under new manager Jose Mourinho.
However, Barcelona acknowledged that Rodri’s approval to open talks does not guarantee that a transfer will be completed.
Catalan media reported that Rodri was convinced after a phone conversation with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who has reportedly asked the club’s management to sign an experienced defender or midfielder.
Barcelona has identified defensive stability as an area requiring improvement, while a serious knee injury is expected to keep regular captain Frenkie de Jong sidelined for several months.
Rodri has established himself as one of the world’s leading midfielders, winning the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament after captaining Spain to their second World Cup title at this year’s competition in North America.
The midfielder, who won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, has enjoyed a trophy-filled spell at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, claiming four Premier League titles and the 2023 UEFA Champions League trophy.
Rodri scored the winning goal in City’s Champions League final victory over Inter Milan in 2023.
Reports suggest Manchester City could be willing to allow the former Atletico Madrid player to leave for around €60 million ($69 million), with his contract set to expire in one year.
However, concerns remain over his fitness after Rodri underwent a minor back operation in late July following a series of knee problems in recent seasons.
The midfielder’s condition could become a key factor in negotiations as Barcelona considers a move for one of the most influential players in European football.
