Ireland’s Leona Maguire is set to clash with world number one Nelly Korda in the final of the LPGA’s T-Mobile Match Play event after both players secured dominant victories to advance into the decider.
Korda, aiming for her fourth consecutive tournament win, displayed her prowess by defeating US compatriot Angel Yin 3&2 in the quarter-finals before overcoming South Korea’s Na-Rin An 4&3 in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Maguire showcased her matchplay skills by defeating Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn 4&3 and Korean Sei-Young Kim 3&2 in her Saturday games in Las Vegas. Speaking of the Shadow Creek venue, Maguire expressed her fondness for the golf course, labeling it as one of her favorites.
Having shown her matchplay pedigree in Europe’s Solheim Cup triumphs, Maguire emphasized her love for the competitiveness of matchplay golf. She met up with her European team-mates ahead of the event in Las Vegas, reflecting on the camaraderie within the team.
Despite Korda’s recent dominant form, Maguire is prepared for the challenge ahead, acknowledging Korda as the best in the world at the moment.
Maguire expressed her excitement for the opportunity to compete against the top-ranked player, highlighting the significance of facing the best in the world.
With two previous LPGA wins under her belt, including victories at the Drive On Championship in 2022 and the Meijer Classic last season, Maguire is poised to give Korda a tough battle in the final.
