Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), has been named Top10 Magazine’s Man of the Year 2026 in recognition of his leadership, contributions to Nigeria’s capital market and commitment to corporate governance.

The magazine announced his selection following a multi-stage screening and selection process involving several distinguished personalities.

Kwairanga succeeds Alhaji Nasiru Haladu Danu, OFR, Chairman of Casiva Limited, who received the award in 2025.

The recognition places the NGX Group chairman among prominent Nigerians who have received the honour since the award was established more than a decade ago.

The late Dr Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director of Access Bank, was the inaugural recipient in 2016. Other past recipients include Umar Abdullahi, Chairman of Cosgrove Group, in 2020; Chief Samuel Onyishi, Chairman of Peace Mass Transit and founder of Maduka University, in 2022; Muhammad Nami, former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, in 2023; and Senator George Akume in 2024.

In a letter communicating the decision, the magazine’s Board of Editors said Kwairanga was selected for his leadership as custodian of Nigeria’s capital market, his contribution to national economic development and his advocacy for transparency, integrity and sound corporate governance.

The board also highlighted his influence on Nigeria’s economic landscape, describing his achievements and leadership qualities as worthy of national recognition.

The magazine stated that his commitment to excellence and the development of the country’s financial market distinguished him among other nominees.

Leadership and Capital Market Contributions

Kwairanga’s recognition comes against the backdrop of his extensive experience in Nigeria’s financial and corporate sectors, spanning banking, pensions, investment, manufacturing and commercial services.

According to his professional profile published by NGX Group, he has approximately 25 years of relevant industry experience and has served in several leadership and board positions across listed and unlisted companies.

He previously served as a council member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and has also been involved in the Institute of Directors of Nigeria, where he serves as a council member.

His corporate leadership experience includes more than a decade of service at Ashaka Cement Plc, where he initially served as a director before becoming chairman of the board.

He is also the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Finmal Finance Services Limited.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Kwairanga holds professional fellowships with the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, the Certified Pension Institute of Nigeria and the Institute of Directors of Nigeria.

His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration obtained in 1991 and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1995, both from the University of Maiduguri. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Governance from Liverpool John Moores University, obtained in 2007.

These professional qualifications and leadership experiences have contributed to his involvement in Nigeria’s investment and financial services landscape.

NGX Group Leadership and Investor Confidence

As chairman of NGX Group, Kwairanga occupies a significant position in Nigeria’s capital market, which provides a platform for companies to raise funds and enables investors to trade securities.

The magazine’s selection committee particularly highlighted his contribution to corporate governance, shareholder protection, board accountability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.

The recognition also reflects the importance of investor confidence and transparency in strengthening the country’s financial system.

Nigeria’s capital market plays an important role in mobilising long-term capital for businesses, supporting government financing and providing investment opportunities for individuals and institutions.

Through the Nigerian Exchange Group and its subsidiaries, the market continues to serve as an important channel for connecting investors with companies seeking capital to expand their operations.

Kwairanga’s leadership recognition therefore comes at a time when Nigeria is working to deepen its capital market, attract more domestic and international investors and strengthen confidence in its financial institutions.

Award Presentation Scheduled for November 22

Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Top10 Magazine, Tony Iji, disclosed that the award would be formally presented to Kwairanga during the magazine’s Annual Excellence Awards night scheduled for November 22, 2026.

The event is expected to attract prominent personalities from the public and private sectors, including business leaders, government representatives and other distinguished Nigerians.

As part of the preparations, the magazine is also producing a special edition dedicated to celebrating Kwairanga and other award recipients.

The publication is expected to document his professional journey, leadership achievements and contributions to Nigeria’s capital market and wider economy.

The Top10 Magazine, established more than 10 years ago, is a monthly publication focused on recognising individuals whose achievements and contributions have made significant impacts across different sectors.

Its Man of the Year award was established as its highest annual recognition, reserved for an individual whose leadership, integrity, influence and national contributions distinguish them during the year.

Kwairanga’s selection adds another prominent name to the award’s history and further highlights the importance of leadership and institutional development in Nigeria’s financial sector.
