Manchester United suffered a 2–0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22, in a disastrous opening to their 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
The result is a major disappointment for manager Michael Carrick, whose team entered the new season with renewed optimism after finishing third last season and strengthening the squad during the summer transfer window.
Hull, returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, stunned United at the MKM Stadium with two first-half goals. Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after United failed to deal with a corner, while Nobel Mendy doubled Hull’s advantage in the 38th minute with a header from a free-kick delivery.
United dominated possession after the break and attempted to mount a comeback, but Hull’s organised defence frustrated their attacking players. Bryan Mbeumo came close late in the match, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis denied him and preserved the clean sheet.
The defeat has raised concerns about United’s defensive organisation and attacking effectiveness. Despite having significant possession and producing 21 shots, United struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with Hull’s back five successfully restricting their opponents.
Carrick also defended his players after questions were raised about their commitment and passion. The United manager rejected suggestions that his team lacked desire, arguing that Hull’s two set-piece goals were decisive moments in the match.
The defeat is particularly concerning because United had been expected to challenge near the top of the Premier League following their strong finish last season. New midfield signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both started but were substituted during the second half after struggling to influence the contest.
Carrick, however, has urged his players and supporters not to panic. He acknowledged that the performance was below expectations but insisted that one match should not determine the direction of the entire season.
Manchester United will now need an immediate response in their next league fixture against Ipswich Town. The match will provide Carrick with an early opportunity to correct the defensive problems and improve an attack that looked short of ideas against Hull.
