Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for the immediate release of his supporter, Rilwan Olawale, while accusing the Federal Government of allowing what he described as intimidation and harassment of people supporting his political ambition.
Obi made the demand in a statement published on Monday, October 26, 2026, in which he described Olawale’s case as disturbing and unacceptable. He called for transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest and urged the authorities to respect the rights of the affected supporter.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also criticised what he characterised as a growing pattern of harassment against his supporters across the country. His comments come as political parties and aspirants intensify activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Obi maintained that Nigerians should be free to support any candidate or political party without fear of intimidation. He argued that peaceful political participation is a fundamental part of democracy and should be protected regardless of a citizen’s political preference.
According to reports published by Nigerian media outlets, Obi called on President Bola Tinubu to uphold democratic principles and ensure that political differences do not become a reason for violence or the denial of citizens’ rights.
The NDC candidate said his political campaign was focused on issues, including competence, accountability, justice and compassion. He maintained that his supporters had chosen peaceful engagement and persuasion rather than violence.
He warned, however, that the commitment to peaceful political participation should not be interpreted as weakness or an unwillingness to defend democratic rights through lawful means.
Call for transparency
A major part of Obi’s demand concerns transparency surrounding Olawale’s arrest. He called on the relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances of the case and ensure that the supporter’s rights are protected.
However, the allegations of politically motivated harassment remain Obi’s claims. The available reports do not independently establish that the arrest was ordered for political reasons. The circumstances of the arrest and any official explanation are therefore important to understanding the matter fully.
The government and relevant law-enforcement authorities have a responsibility to enforce the law while respecting due process and the rights of individuals. Where allegations of improper treatment are raised, a transparent explanation can help establish the facts and reduce public suspicion.
The issue also raises broader questions about the environment in which political campaigns are conducted. Political competition is a normal feature of democratic governance, but it depends on citizens being able to express their preferences without threats or unlawful interference.
Political tensions ahead of 2027
Obi’s statement comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections. Parties and political figures are working to build support, communicate their policies and position themselves before voters.
The former Anambra governor has continued to advocate what he describes as a new approach to governance, emphasising accountability and economic opportunities. His criticisms of the Federal Government have also placed him at the centre of debates over economic policy and political leadership.
The dispute over Olawale’s arrest is likely to add to those political exchanges, particularly if further information emerges about the circumstances of the case.
For democracy to function effectively, political disagreements must be handled within the law. Citizens should be able to support candidates, attend political meetings and express their views peacefully. At the same time, allegations against public institutions should be assessed on the basis of verifiable evidence and any response from the relevant authorities.
Importance of protecting political participation
The demand for Olawale’s release highlights the importance of due process and the protection of political rights during an election cycle. A credible electoral environment requires more than the organisation of voting. It also depends on the freedom of citizens to participate in political activities without unlawful pressure.
Obi has said he and his supporters will remain peaceful while defending their democratic rights through lawful means. The next important development will be clarification from the relevant authorities regarding Olawale’s status and the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Until further details are established, the claims of political intimidation should be treated as allegations rather than proven findings. A transparent account of the case would help Nigerians better understand the situation and assess the competing claims.
