Samia Suluhu Hassan on Wednesday instructed government officials to travel together in a single bus during official trips to conserve fuel, responding to shortages linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Fuel prices in Tanzania have surged roughly one-third since March, according to the country’s energy regulator, prompting the government to implement rationing measures.

During a swearing-in ceremony for officials, President Hassan announced that only her core convoy—including her escort, police, and a backup vehicle—would accompany her during official motorcades. Her entourage typically consists of over 30 vehicles, including luxury SUVs and police outriders, often causing significant traffic delays.

“From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus… to cut fuel consumption,” Hassan said.

The directive follows similar measures in the region. Last week, Ethiopia announced it would prioritise fuel supply for vehicles transporting essential goods and public transport amid tightening fuel availability.

The move underscores the ripple effects of global oil disruptions on East African economies and the need for conservation strategies during times of supply stress.
