Akpabio Assures Nigerians of Legislative Continuity
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections will not interfere with the legislative responsibilities of members of the National Assembly.
Akpabio said lawmakers would continue to perform their constitutional duties throughout their four-year tenure, even as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the next general elections.
The Senate President made the remarks while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He had attended a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District.
The meeting also witnessed endorsements for the 2027 political ambitions of President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.
Akpabio’s comments come as political activities across the country begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
‘We Are Elected for Four Years’
The Senate President said lawmakers were elected for four-year terms and were expected to work throughout the period.
He argued that politicians could balance their responsibilities as lawmakers with their participation in election campaigns.
According to Akpabio, campaign activities could be scheduled around legislative duties rather than allowing electioneering to bring parliamentary business to a halt.
He suggested that campaigns could take place during afternoons or evenings while lawmakers dedicate their mornings to legislative responsibilities.
