The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a major Ebola health crisis, with the number of confirmed infections surpassing 6,000 and deaths approaching 3,000.

According to figures released by health authorities on Monday, August 31, 2026, the outbreak has recorded 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths. More than 1,300 people have reportedly recovered from the disease.

The outbreak has become the largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, surpassing the country’s previous major outbreak between 2018 and 2020.

The disease has spread across several provinces and health zones, with Ituri province remaining one of the worst-affected areas. Other parts of the country have also reported infections, increasing concerns among health officials about further transmission.

The Ebola outbreak is particularly challenging because it is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. Unlike some other Ebola strains, there is currently no approved vaccine specifically designed to protect against Bundibugyo Ebola, making containment efforts more difficult.

Health authorities and international organisations are working to strengthen disease surveillance, identify new cases and trace people who may have been exposed to infected patients.

However, the response has been complicated by insecurity and armed conflict in parts of the country. Population displacement has also made it more difficult for health workers to monitor communities and ensure that infected people receive medical attention.

Healthcare workers are also facing difficult working conditions, while limited access to some affected communities has created additional obstacles to controlling the spread of the virus.

Ebola is a highly infectious disease that can cause severe illness and death. It spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person or someone who has died from the disease.

The current situation has raised concerns among international health authorities about the possibility of the outbreak expanding further if transmission is not brought under control.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and other health partners are supporting the Congolese government in its response. Their efforts include disease surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, treatment of patients and public awareness campaigns.

Despite the high number of deaths, the number of people who have recovered offers some encouragement to health officials. Authorities are continuing to urge communities to report suspected cases quickly and follow recommended health measures.

The situation remains closely monitored as Congo works to contain the outbreak and prevent the virus from spreading to additional areas.
