The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has warned politicians and political parties against inflammatory statements, hate speech and actions that could lead to political unrest or violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Bamidele, who is also Chairman of the South-West Caucus in the National Assembly, made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians as the country marked its 66th anniversary on October 1, 2026.

The Senate Leader urged political parties and their candidates to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2026.

According to him, politicians have the constitutional right to pursue their political ambitions, but such rights must be exercised within the law and with respect for the peace and stability of the country.

Bamidele specifically warned against comments and actions capable of aggravating political tensions or provoking ethno-religious violence before, during and after the 2027 elections.

He said political competition should not become a reason for Nigerians to turn against one another, stressing that political ambitions should be pursued with restraint and respect for democratic values.

The senator said Nigeria’s political actors should remember that the country belongs to all citizens and should not be placed at risk because of the ambitions of individuals or political parties.

He also called on parties and candidates to present clear programmes and policies that respond to the needs and aspirations of Nigerians as they prepare for the next general election.

The warning comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to increase across the country. Political parties and aspirants have been making preparations, building alliances and presenting their plans to voters.

Bamidele said the political process should be guided by the rules of democracy rather than hostility and violence.

He also appealed to political actors to ensure that their activities strengthen national unity instead of deepening divisions along ethnic, religious or political lines.

The Senate Leader’s comments form part of wider calls by political leaders for peaceful political activities as Nigeria approaches another election cycle. On Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, other lawmakers also called for unity and peaceful politics.

Bamidele further urged political parties to ensure that their campaign messages and programmes contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.

He said political ambition should not be placed above the country’s peace, unity and democratic institutions.

The 2027 general elections are expected to attract significant political activity as parties and candidates seek support from voters across the country. The period leading to elections can involve intense competition, making calls for peaceful campaigns and respect for electoral rules particularly important.

The Senate Leader therefore encouraged politicians to demonstrate responsibility in their public statements and conduct.

He also reminded Nigerians that the country’s democratic development depends not only on political leaders but also on citizens who participate in the electoral process.

As political parties prepare for the 2027 elections, Bamidele’s message places emphasis on peaceful campaigns, lawful political activity and the protection of Nigeria’s national unity.
