Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was reported to have experienced a medical episode during Sunday’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense, according to the Danish Football Association.

In a statement shared on social media, the association said Eriksen is “conscious and doing well under the circumstances” following the incident.

The development comes five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during a UEFA European Championship match against Finland in 2021, an event that led to his recovery and return to professional football with the help of a cardiac device.

The Danish FA quoted national team doctor Morten Boesen as saying Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch by himself after the incident.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen said.

He added that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained awareness quickly and was promptly attended to by medical staff on site.

According to the team doctor, Eriksen is currently undergoing further medical examinations at a hospital to determine the cause of the incident.

“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay,” Boesen added.

The Danish Football Association also confirmed that medical personnel responded immediately and maintained contact with the player throughout the incident.

Further updates are expected after additional tests are completed.
