Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed reports of the rescue of 360 people abducted by terrorists in Ngoshe, Borno State, describing the development as a major relief for the victims and their families.
The rescue operation was carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI and other security agencies in the Mandara Mountains, a known terrorist stronghold in southern Borno State.
The victims had reportedly been held captive since March following an attack by Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Ngoshe. During the attack, operational vehicles were destroyed, security personnel were dispersed and several people were abducted.
Reacting to the development in a statement posted on his X account, Atiku expressed joy over the successful operation and commended the efforts of the military and security agencies involved.
According to him, the rescue has brought an end to months of uncertainty and emotional distress for the abductees and their loved ones.
The former vice president praised the Nigerian military for its role in securing the release of the victims and acknowledged the sacrifices made by security personnel in the fight against terrorism and banditry.
While celebrating the successful rescue, Atiku noted that insecurity remains a major challenge across the country, with many Nigerians still in captivity.
He called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of other abducted victims, including schoolchildren and teachers reportedly kidnapped in Oriire, Oyo State, and Mussa in Borno State.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the capacity of Nigeria’s armed forces to defeat insurgency if provided with adequate resources, modern equipment and effective political leadership.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the nation’s security architecture to improve the fight against terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities.
According to him, greater emphasis should be placed on intelligence gathering, technology-driven security solutions and preventive measures that can stop attacks before they occur.
The former vice president argued that proactive security strategies would help reduce the frequency of terrorist attacks and improve public safety across the country.
He urged authorities to remain committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring that all Nigerians still held by terrorists and bandits regain their freedom.
