President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned four major Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure projects across Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri, marking a significant expansion of Nigeria’s clean energy and transport transition programme.

The projects were delivered under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) as part of the Federal Government’s push to accelerate domestic gas utilisation following the removal of fuel subsidy.

In Lagos, the President inaugurated the Portland Gas CNG Mother Station at Ojota, which has a daily dispensing capacity of 96,000 standard cubic metres and includes supporting distribution and storage facilities. Also in Lagos, he commissioned the IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation CNG Refuelling Station, which forms part of a wider network of 15 planned stations across the state aimed at reducing transport costs and emissions.

In Abuja, Tinubu also commissioned the High-Capacity CNG Daughter Booster Station in Jahi District, described as one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in West Africa. The station is designed to serve hundreds of vehicles daily and includes conversion infrastructure for cars and tricycles.

At the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), the President inaugurated a CNG daughter station and conversion centre under the Special Palliative Relief on University Transportation (SPROUT) programme. The facility is intended to support student and staff mobility through subsidised cleaner transport options, including CNG-powered buses and tricycles.

As part of the broader rollout, the government also announced a financing scheme under the Credit Access for Light and Mobility (CALM) Fund, in partnership with financial institutions including CrediCorp, Moniepoint Microfinance Bank, and the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited. The initiative will allow motorists and transport operators to convert vehicles to CNG with loans repayable over time at concessional rates.

Speaking during the commissioning, President Tinubu said Nigeria’s energy transition would be driven by its abundant gas resources rather than imported alternatives.

“Nigeria is a gas nation. Our energy future will not be borrowed. It will be built from what we have,” he said.

He added that the administration’s reforms were already moving from policy into tangible infrastructure, particularly in urban transport systems like Lagos, which he described as central to national mobility and energy consumption.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the projects align with Nigeria’s Decade of Gas agenda and highlight the country’s long-term strategy to leverage its vast natural gas reserves for economic development.

He noted that Nigeria holds more than 210 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, which could significantly support industrial growth, electricity generation, and transportation if fully developed.

The Executive Director of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, Oluwole Adama, said the commissioning demonstrated effective collaboration between government, regulators, investors, and private sector partners in delivering energy infrastructure.

He commended the enabling environment provided by the Federal Government and the role of regulatory agencies and financial institutions in advancing the projects.

The CNG expansion is expected to reduce reliance on petrol, lower transport costs, and support Nigeria’s broader efforts to transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources while improving access to affordable mobility nationwide.
