In a swift and decisive response to the rising threat of highway banditry, a combined tactical team of security operatives has rescued eleven members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other stranded commuters who were intercepted by heavily armed gunmen along a major transit corridor in Kogi State.
The incident unfolded when a commercial bus conveying prospective corps members and other passengers to their respective orientation centers ran into an ambush mounted by criminal elements. The assailants, who emerged from the surrounding forest cover, force-halted the vehicle, ordered the occupants out at gunpoint, and marched them deep into the hinterland. However, prompt distress calls triggered an immediate joint search-and-rescue operation involving personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes.
High-Stakes Bush-Combing Operation
Following clear directives from state security leadership, tactical teams mobilized deep into the dense vegetation spanning the affected axis. Security forces established contact with the fleeing gang hours after the abduction, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire. Overwhelmed by the superior firepower and coordinated encirclement of the combined team, the bandits were forced to abandon their captives and flee deeper into the forest, with several carrying gunshot wounds.
The police confirmed that all 11 rescued individuals—including the youth corps members—were retrieved safely from the scene without sustaining major injuries.
