Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with India as both countries prepare for key international engagements scheduled for 2026.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, gave the assurance during a meeting with the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, held on Thursday at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, Ahmed expressed appreciation for the longstanding cordial relations between both countries and described India as a strategic development partner.
He noted that Nigeria and India would further deepen their cooperation ahead of the India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled for May 2026 in New Delhi.
Ahmed emphasised that both nations share democratic values and common goals centred on sustainable development and South-South cooperation, adding that stronger multilateral engagement is essential in today’s evolving global political and economic environment.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s interest in expanding Indian investment across key sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and local value addition.
Security cooperation was another key focus, with Ahmed stressing the need for enhanced collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts through technology transfer and defence capacity building.
On his part, High Commissioner Singh briefed the Nigerian delegation on preparations for the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for May 14–15 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
He also underscored India’s expectation of Nigeria’s active participation in both the BRICS engagement and the India-Africa Forum Summit, describing Nigeria as a critical partner in Africa’s diplomatic and economic landscape.
Singh further outlined ongoing cooperation initiatives under the International Solar Alliance and the Africa Solar Facility, noting planned renewable energy investments and broader developmental partnerships with Nigeria.
He added that India’s foreign policy in Africa places strong emphasis on trade, renewable energy, defence collaboration, industrialisation, agriculture, and technology transfer.
The forthcoming forums are expected to bring together African leaders, senior officials, and global stakeholders to strengthen cooperation and address shared development priorities.
