Manchester City began their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2–0 victory over Porto at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday night.
After a goalless first half, Erling Haaland opened the scoring shortly after the restart, heading home a cross from Enzo Fernández. The Norwegian striker then sealed the victory in stoppage time, calmly finishing after a cut-back from Rayan Aït-Nouri.
City dominated possession and created several chances, finishing the match with 20 shots, including 10 on target, while Porto failed to register a single attempt on target.
The victory continues Enzo Maresca’s impressive start as Manchester City’s manager. City have now won their opening four competitive matches under the Italian coach, including three Premier League victories before their European opener.
Despite the result, the match was not without controversy. Tensions increased after a physical challenge involving City’s Marc Guéhi and Porto’s Gabri Veiga, with players and staff involved in a heated confrontation in the tunnel at half-time.
Maresca admitted that City could have scored more but was pleased with the overall performance. The result gives City an important three points as they begin their Champions League campaign.
