The convention is designed to energise Republican voters, promote the party’s agenda and strengthen its chances of maintaining control of Congress. Trump is scheduled to speak on both nights, while Vice President JD Vance is also among the leading speakers.
Republican leaders are expected to focus on issues including immigration, taxes, the economy, education and the cost of living. The gathering is also an opportunity for the party to promote candidates competing in closely fought congressional races.
However, the Trump-focused event comes with political risks. Several Republicans, particularly lawmakers and candidates in competitive races, have chosen to stay away. Some are concerned that appearing too closely aligned with Trump could hurt their chances with moderate voters. Reuters reported that the president’s approval ratings remain low, creating a difficult environment for Republicans seeking re-election.
Democrats are also using the convention to attack Republicans by portraying the event as evidence that the party is too closely tied to Trump. They are organising their own activities in Dallas as the November 3 midterm election approaches.
The convention therefore represents an important test of Trump’s influence over the Republican Party. With control of Congress at stake, Republicans are betting that his ability to energise his political base will translate into votes in competitive races across the country.
