A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed following a deadly armed robbery attack on his team while returning from an away match on Sunday.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as a tragic loss to both his club and the wider football community.

Frimpong, who played for Berekum Chelsea FC, was reportedly among passengers on the team bus when it was ambushed by armed men along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

According to police, the attack occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time (2230 GMT), when masked men armed with guns and assault rifles opened fire on the bus, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

Authorities said Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment at a hospital.

Another victim, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, was also reportedly robbed of 4,500 cedis (about $408) during the attack, according to a statement from Ghana police.

The Ghana Football Association described Frimpong as a promising young talent whose dedication and passion reflected the spirit of the domestic league.

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the association said.

Frimpong, aged 20, joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the beginning of the year. He featured in 13 league matches and scored two goals before his untimely death, according to local reports.

The incident has sparked shock across Ghana’s football community, with calls expected for improved security measures for teams travelling for league fixtures.
