US President Donald Trump has said that the United States is holding discussions with Russia and China about nuclear disarmament, an announcement that could have important implications for international security.
Trump made the comments in an interview with Newsmax, saying he would like to see nuclear weapons reduced or eliminated if an agreement can be reached.
The discussions involve the world’s three major nuclear powers, whose weapons capabilities have long been central to global security debates. Russia possesses the largest stockpile of stored nuclear warheads, followed by the United States and China, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
The US president also expressed concern about China’s expanding nuclear capabilities, suggesting that Beijing could approach US capabilities within the next five years.
The announcement comes at a sensitive time for international arms control. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, commonly known as New START, was signed by the United States and Russia in 2010 and later extended for five years. Its expiration earlier in 2026 has increased attention on what framework, if any, will govern future limits on strategic nuclear weapons.
Arms-control agreements are intended to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict by establishing limits, verification arrangements and communication channels between countries. Without such agreements, governments may have fewer formal mechanisms for monitoring each other’s nuclear capabilities and preventing misunderstandings.
However, achieving a new agreement would be complicated. The three countries have different security priorities, military strategies and expectations regarding verification. Russia and the United States have traditionally negotiated bilateral limits, while bringing China into a wider framework would require addressing its distinct nuclear posture and security concerns.
Any meaningful agreement would also need to address questions about transparency, inspections and compliance. Governments would have to establish ways to verify that commitments are being followed without compromising sensitive national security information.
For the international community, progress towards nuclear disarmament could reduce the danger of an arms race and lower the risk of accidental escalation. Nevertheless, a public statement about discussions does not mean that a formal agreement has been reached.
Diplomatic contacts must be followed by negotiations, detailed proposals and commitments that can be verified by the parties involved.
The announcement will therefore be watched closely by governments and security experts. Its significance will depend on whether the United States, Russia and China can translate expressions of interest into a practical framework for controlling nuclear weapons.
