Spain delivered a strong statement of intent ahead of the World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over Peru on Monday in their final warm-up friendly before the tournament kicks off.

The European champions, considered among the favourites for the competition, were without Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who is recovering from injury. Despite his absence, Spain dominated proceedings against a Peru side that failed to qualify for the tournament.

Yamal, along with fellow winger Nico Williams, is expected to be available for Spain’s opening World Cup match against debutants Cape Verde on June 15.

Luis de la Fuente’s side wasted no time asserting control in Puebla, Mexico, taking the lead just two minutes into the match. Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal struck a brilliant effort from outside the box, firing into the top corner.

Spain doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute through Barcelona midfielder Pedri, who continued his impressive form with a composed finish.

The pressure on Peru increased further shortly after halftime when goalkeeper Pedro Gallese turned a cross into his own net, making it 3-0 following an error under pressure in the 53rd minute.

Peru managed to pull one back in the 66th minute when Jairo Velez found the net, offering a brief consolation in front of a crowd of 46,000 spectators.

Despite the goal, Spain remained in control for much of the encounter, demonstrating fluid attacking play and defensive organisation that reinforces their status as one of the tournament favourites.

The result provides a confidence boost for De la Fuente’s squad as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign with high expectations and a largely fit squad expected to return in time for the opener.
