Nigerian teenage swimmer Aidan Dumuje-Abili has described representing Nigeria at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games as the fulfilment of a childhood dream, following his participation in the international competition currently taking place in Senegal.

The 15-year-old swimmer said competing at the global youth sporting event had been one of his major ambitions since he began developing his swimming career.

Dumuje-Abili made another appearance in the swimming competition on Tuesday, finishing fifth in Heat 4 of the men’s 100-metre backstroke with a time of 1:00.79.

The event marked his second competition at the Games, providing another opportunity for the young Nigerian to gain valuable international experience against swimmers from different countries.

Speaking about his participation, the Grange School, Lagos student explained that representing Nigeria at the Youth Olympics had always been a major personal goal.

He said the opportunity was something he had worked towards from a very young age, making his appearance in Dakar an important milestone in his sporting journey.

His participation also highlights the growing presence of young Nigerian athletes in international competitions and the importance of developing sporting talent at the grassroots level.

A promising swimming career

Dumuje-Abili has already participated in several competitions, building experience through school, national and continental swimming events.

Among the competitions he has attended are the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships and the Africa Youth Games held in Angola.

His performance at the Africa Youth Games was particularly notable, as he won a bronze medal in the men’s 50-metre backstroke.

The achievement provided further evidence of his potential as one of Nigeria’s emerging young swimming talents.

He has also accumulated medals and experience from competitions such as the World School Games, Dolphin Swimming League in Lagos and the National Youth Games.

According to World Aquatics athlete records, he recorded a personal best of 1:03.80 in the men’s 100-metre backstroke at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships.

These experiences have helped him develop his competitive ability and prepare for more demanding international events.

His latest appearance at Dakar therefore represents another stage in his development as he continues to compete against some of the best young swimmers from around the world.

Inspired by Messi and Michael Phelps

Beyond swimming, Dumuje-Abili has interests in several other sporting activities, including football, basketball and tennis.

However, he has identified swimming as the sport he hopes to pursue professionally.

His sporting inspirations include Argentine football legend Lionel Messi and American swimming icon Michael Phelps.

He explained that he admires Messi’s leadership and determination on the football pitch.

He also looks up to Phelps because of his remarkable achievements in international swimming.

Phelps is widely recognised as the most decorated Olympian in history, having won 28 Olympic medals, including 23 gold medals.

The young Nigerian’s admiration for the swimming legend reflects his ambition to develop into a successful professional athlete.

Importance of youth sporting development

Dumuje-Abili’s participation comes during the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which are taking place from October 31 to November 13, 2026.

The competition is particularly significant because Dakar is hosting the first Olympic sporting event on African soil.

Nigeria is represented by 19 athletes across six sports, including athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.

The Games provide young athletes with opportunities to compete internationally, develop their abilities and gain experience that could support future participation at senior-level competitions.

For Nigeria, supporting emerging athletes through training facilities, qualified coaching, funding and regular international exposure remains important to improving performance across different sporting disciplines.

Although finishing fifth in his heat was not a medal-winning result, Dumuje-Abili’s participation represents an important experience in his development.

As he continues his swimming journey, the young athlete will be hoping to improve his performances, compete at more international events and eventually establish himself among Africa’s leading swimmers.

His story also serves as encouragement to other young Nigerians who aspire to represent their country through sports.
