The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain confident and actively participate in the 2027 general elections, regardless of the party’s current political standing in their states.
Speaking during the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Wike dismissed concerns that the absence of PDP governors in some states would hinder electoral success. He urged party members to set aside fear and believe in their chances at the polls.
Wike also reassured stakeholders that the party’s planned national convention, scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, would proceed as planned. According to him, all necessary conditions have been met, and there are strong indications that several former members who left the party may soon return.
The former governor of Rivers State expressed satisfaction with the turnout at the NEC meeting, describing it as a sign that committed members are beginning to recognize what he described as the “authentic” faction of the PDP.
On reconciliation efforts within the party, Wike emphasized the need for sincerity, urging party leaders to engage those who are willing to return while allowing others who are not committed to leave. He stressed that the reconciliation process should not be driven solely by personal political ambitions.
The minister further warned that members who fail to demonstrate loyalty before the convention may not be welcomed afterward, insisting that individuals must clearly define their position within the party.
Wike also took a swipe at Seyi Makinde and other PDP governors who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He rejected earlier accusations that he was aligned with the APC, noting that some of his critics had since left the PDP.
Reaffirming his commitment, Wike stated that he has no intention of leaving the party and remains dedicated to fostering genuine reconciliation, even beyond the upcoming convention.
