President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have resolved to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Germany, focusing on collaboration in the power, railway, and security sectors.
In a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon, the two leaders also discussed cooperation in creative arts and skill development, according to a statement from the Presidency signed by Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
During the discussion on the Presidential Power Initiative, President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s need for support in power transmission. Chancellor Merz pledged that Siemens would assist in the initiative, while Deutsche Bank expressed readiness to finance the project.
The leaders also addressed security concerns in the Sahel region. President Tinubu called for the supply of used helicopters for intelligence reconnaissance, describing the Sahel corridor as a critical area needing support.
Chancellor Merz welcomed Nigeria’s incoming ambassador to Germany and emphasised the importance of arts, proposing the establishment of a Great Museum of African Arts.
The brief conversation, which began at 2:01 p.m. and ended around 2:10 p.m., reinforced both countries’ commitment to advancing strategic partnerships across energy, infrastructure, security, and cultural sectors.
