The Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH) community in Jos, Plateau State, is in mourning following the death of Dr. Salome Oboyi, a young medical doctor who contracted Lassa fever from a patient under her care.
The tragic news was confirmed on Tuesday by the Bingham University Alumni Doctors via their X handle, describing her death as a “painful loss” for the medical community.
“Dr. Salome Oboyi, a Nigerian medical doctor, has passed away from Lassa fever in Jos, Plateau State,” the post stated, confirming her cause of death.
Dr. Oboyi was a Senior Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BHUTH. The alumni post remembered her dedication, professionalism, and selfless service, highlighting the deep impact she had on colleagues, patients, and friends.
Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, confirmed awareness of the case and revealed that two additional Lassa fever cases have been recorded in the state.
Baamlong said the government has procured vaccines and will soon commence state-wide vaccination efforts. Sensitisation campaigns will also be intensified to educate residents on preventing and controlling Lassa fever.
