A coalition of civil society organisations and health sector stakeholders has launched the Open Lagos Health Sector Spot-Check, an accountability initiative designed to assess the state of healthcare delivery across Lagos State.
The initiative will cover 72 public health facilities spread across 18 local government areas as stakeholders seek to generate evidence that can support improvements in healthcare delivery ahead of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals deadline.
The week-long exercise is scheduled to take place from August 3 to 7, 2026. Trained assessors will conduct rapid spot-checks across selected primary healthcare centres, secondary healthcare facilities and general hospitals.
The assessment will focus on critical aspects of healthcare delivery, including the availability of essential services, infrastructure, staffing, medical equipment and other indicators that determine the quality and accessibility of healthcare.
The initiative is being championed by the Lagos State Civil Society Participation for Development, the Lagos State Accountability Mechanism, the Public Health Sustainable Advocacy Initiative and the Centre for Communication and Social Impact, alongside other civil society partners.
The organisations are working in collaboration with key government and development partners, including EngenderHealth, the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.
The Coordinator of the Lagos State Civil Society Participation for Development, Barrister Ayo Adebusoye, described the programme as a whole-of-sector approach designed to provide an evidence-based picture of healthcare delivery across the state.
According to the organisers, the exercise is expected to provide real-time information on conditions in selected health facilities and identify areas requiring urgent attention.
The findings will be compiled into a health sector scorecard and presented at an Open Lagos Health Sector Dialogue. The dialogue is expected to bring together government officials, traditional rulers, local government chairmen, development partners, private sector representatives, community leaders and civil society organisations.
The stakeholders will review the findings and discuss practical measures for addressing gaps identified during the assessment.
The initiative comes as Lagos continues to face the challenge of providing quality and accessible healthcare to its growing population. Primary healthcare centres, general hospitals and other public health facilities remain critical to delivering essential services, particularly to residents who depend heavily on government-supported healthcare.
By assessing facilities across multiple levels of the healthcare system, the organisers hope to provide a clearer picture of the strengths and weaknesses that require policy attention.
The exercise also places emphasis on accountability and evidence-based decision-making. Rather than relying solely on official reports, the spot-check is expected to generate information directly from healthcare facilities and communities.
With the 2030 SDG deadline approaching, stakeholders say initiatives that promote transparency, accountability and effective monitoring will be important in measuring progress and ensuring that healthcare investments translate into better outcomes for residents.
The Open Lagos Health Sector Spot-Check is therefore expected to provide a platform for identifying gaps while encouraging collaboration among government, civil society and other stakeholders in strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
