Nigeria’s men and women will head to Tunis, Tunisia, in October for the 2025 ITTF African Championships, with a revitalized squad that sees Taiwo Mati back in national colors. The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) confirmed a 10-man list for the event, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships in London.
For Mati, it marks a remarkable return after a two-year absence. The left-handed star, who impressed at the 2023 World Championships in Durban, booked his spot with a semifinal finish at the 2025 West Regional Championships in Lagos.
His performance edged out Muiz Adegoke and secured him a place alongside Africa’s top-ranked player, Quadri Aruna; 2019 African Games gold medalist, Olajide Omotayo; two-time West African champion, Matthew Kuti; and rising youngster, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai.
The women’s lineup reflects a focus on youth development, with promising names like Favour Ojo, Aishat Rabiu, Kabirat Ayoola, and Sukurat Aiyelabegan joining captain Ajoke Ojomu.
NTTF Vice President, Adesoji Tayo, highlighted the federation’s vision:
“We believe that exposing these young players to top-tier competitions will help them grow stronger and more confident. With guidance from experienced coaches like Segun Toriola and Dotun Omoniyi, we’re optimistic they’ll gain valuable experience and deliver strong performances.”
With Nigeria and Egypt leading the men’s challenge, and a competitive women’s field featuring the likes of Ghana, Algeria, and host nation Tunisia, the stage is set for a thrilling continental battle.
Top performers will not only claim regional bragging rights but also secure a place at London 2026, a centenary edition marking 100 years since the World Championships began in the same city.
