Governor Ademola Adeleke has secured a second term as governor of Osun State after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the governorship election held on August 15, 2026.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, the winner after he polled 511,067 votes across the state.

Oyebamiji of the APC finished second with 444,815 votes, giving Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 17,180 votes.

The election was conducted across Osun State’s 30 local government areas and 332 wards, with 15 candidates participating in the contest. Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.

The result has generated significant political reactions across Nigeria, particularly because Osun is regarded as an important political battleground in the South-West.

Adeleke’s victory has also triggered fresh debate about the political implications of the election ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The APC has acknowledged that internal problems contributed to its defeat. The party attributed its poor performance partly to internal wrangling, disagreements surrounding its candidate and complacency among its members. The development has prompted calls within the party for a reassessment of its political strategy ahead of 2027.

The reaction has not been limited to political parties.

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola congratulated Adeleke on his victory and urged him to extend the “hand of fellowship” to political opponents while making his second term inclusive.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also visited Adeleke following the election and charged the governor to sustain good governance and continue delivering for the people of Osun State.

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, meanwhile, urged Oyebamiji to accept the result and congratulate Adeleke. He also called on the APC candidate to offer constructive policy ideas that could contribute to the development of the state.

The response from the defeated APC candidate is also being closely watched. Oyebamiji has spoken publicly following the election defeat, although the result has already been formally declared by INEC.

For Adeleke, the victory provides another opportunity to consolidate his administration’s programmes during a second term.

It also gives the governor additional political leverage within Osun and the wider South-West as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.

The election has therefore become more than a state-level contest. Political observers are examining the result for lessons about voter preferences, party organisation, opposition strategy and the ability of incumbents to retain power.

The APC’s admission that internal divisions contributed to its defeat could become particularly significant as Nigeria’s major political parties prepare for the 2027 electoral cycle.

For Adeleke, however, the immediate challenge will be turning his electoral victory into stronger governance, economic development and improved public services.

With his second term secured, expectations will now rise among Osun residents for the governor to build on his first-term record and deliver on the promises made during the campaign.
