The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for the conduct of a bye-election to fill the vacant Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
The seat became vacant following the death of the lawmaker, Tongo Yaya, who represented the constituency.
INEC announced the election date in a timetable and schedule of activities released on Tuesday, stating that the exercise would be conducted in line with the 1999 Constitution and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
The timetable was signed and released by the Public Affairs Officer, Mohorret Bigun, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner.
According to the timetable, INEC will publish the Notice of Election on Thursday, August 20.
Political parties participating in the bye-election are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and 25.
The commission will publish the list of nominated candidates on September 8, while campaigns are scheduled to begin on September 9 and end on September 17.
INEC urged political parties to comply strictly with the timetable and conduct their activities in accordance with the law.
The commission also assured stakeholders that it would provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates participating in the election.
The bye-election will cover 903 polling units, 31 registration areas and three local government areas within the federal constituency.
INEC said it remained committed to conducting a free, fair and inclusive election across the constituency.
The commission also urged eligible voters in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency to participate in the electoral process and exercise their civic responsibility peacefully.
