Germany’s Alexander Zverev has advanced to the last 16 of the 2026 Cincinnati Open after overcoming a determined challenge from France’s Terence Atmane in a tightly contested third-round match.
The top seed prevailed 7-6(4), 7-6(8) on Monday, August 17, securing his place in the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
The victory was Zverev’s 46th ATP match win of the 2026 season, further strengthening his lead in the season’s match-win standings.
However, the German was pushed throughout the contest by Atmane, who produced aggressive tennis and repeatedly tested the world number one with powerful groundstrokes and serving.
Atmane made the stronger start, moving into an early 3-0 lead in the opening set. Zverev gradually recovered his rhythm and fought back to level the contest before the set went to a tie-break.
The German maintained his composure in the breaker, winning it 7-4 to take the opening set.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with neither player able to establish a decisive advantage. Zverev eventually secured another tie-break victory, winning it 8-6 to close out the match in straight sets.
Zverev praised his opponent’s performance after the match, acknowledging Atmane’s aggressive approach and ability to make it difficult for him to dictate rallies.
The victory is particularly important for Zverev as he continues his preparation for the US Open, which begins on August 30 in New York.
The German entered Cincinnati looking to regain momentum after an early exit at the previous Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. He had also been tested in his opening Cincinnati match, where he defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie in three sets.
Cincinnati therefore represents an important opportunity for Zverev to sharpen his game before the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
His next opponent will be American Tommy Paul, who also progressed to the last 16.
The upcoming encounter is expected to provide another significant test for Zverev as he attempts to build a deep run in Cincinnati.
The German is also carrying strong momentum from the first half of the season. He won the French Open and reached the Wimbledon final, making him one of the leading contenders heading into the US Open.
For Atmane, the defeat ends another impressive Cincinnati campaign after his strong performance at the tournament last year. Despite the loss, his performance against the world’s top-ranked player underlines his growing competitiveness on the ATP Tour.
With the US Open approaching, Zverev will now turn his attention to Tommy Paul and the opportunity to move deeper into the Cincinnati draw.
A strong finish in Ohio would provide the German with valuable confidence before he begins his pursuit of another Grand Slam title in New York.
