South African international Thapelo Maseko has completed his move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Danish champions FC Copenhagen, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty over his future.

The 22-year-old winger was officially unveiled by the Danish club on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, after signing a four-year contract. Reports put the transfer fee at around R28 million.

Maseko said he was delighted to begin the next chapter of his career in Denmark and described the move as a dream opportunity.

“I am very proud of this agreement,” Maseko said in comments released by FC Copenhagen. He added that he had arrived with the ambition of making a difference and winning trophies with the club.

The South African winger will wear the number 12 shirt at FC Copenhagen.

His arrival also gives the Danish side another attacking option as it prepares for domestic and European competition.

FC Copenhagen coach Bo Svensson praised Maseko’s qualities, describing him as an explosive and dynamic player capable of creating problems for defenders in one-on-one situations.

Svensson highlighted the winger’s pace and ability to attack space behind opposing defences. He also noted Maseko’s ability to cut inside onto his left foot and create opportunities for teammates.

The coach acknowledged that there are still areas of the player’s game that can be developed but said Maseko has significant potential and works hard for the team.

The transfer represents an important step in Maseko’s European career.

The winger previously spent time with AEL Limassol in Cyprus on loan from Sundowns, but his long-term future at the South African club became uncertain following limited opportunities and interest from clubs outside the country.

The transfer saga intensified after Maseko attracted interest from FC Copenhagen and other European and African clubs. Sundowns eventually reached an agreement with the Danish club, allowing the player to make the permanent move.

Maseko’s stock had also risen considerably following his performances for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He scored against South Korea during the tournament, helping South Africa advance from the group stage. His performances attracted additional attention from clubs looking for young attacking talent.

The move to Copenhagen now gives Maseko the opportunity to test himself in European football while playing for a club with ambitions on both the domestic and continental stages.

For South African football, his transfer is another example of a young local player securing a move to Europe after developing through the country’s professional system.

Maseko will now look to establish himself quickly in Denmark and translate his pace, direct running and attacking ability into consistent performances for FC Copenhagen.

The move could also strengthen his position within the South African national team, particularly as Bafana Bafana continue to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

With his European adventure now officially underway, attention will turn to how quickly the young winger adapts to Danish football and whether he can become a regular contributor for his new club.
