The Ogun State Government has approved a one-day weekly off-duty arrangement for public servants, alongside a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for a period of three months as part of new palliative measures.
The announcement was made in a statement by the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, who said the initiative was approved by Governor Dapo Abiodun to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and increased transportation costs on workers.
According to the statement, the policy is designed to ease commuting challenges while also improving productivity and morale within the public service.
“The gesture of government is aimed at further easing the burden on the workforce, who now face increased challenges commuting to work,” Onasanya said.
He explained that workers in essential sectors such as healthcare, education, security, judiciary, and key administrative roles will be exempted from the one-day-off arrangement due to the nature of their duties.
However, these categories of workers will still receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance.
Onasanya added that the specific off-duty day for eligible workers will be determined by accounting officers in ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that public service delivery is not disrupted.
He further noted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce and expressed appreciation to the governor for the intervention.
Public servants were also urged to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating greater dedication, discipline and efficiency in service delivery.
The state government said the policy is expected to provide meaningful relief amid ongoing economic pressures linked to fuel subsidy removal and inflationary trends affecting transport and cost of living nationwide.
