The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the emergence of Bala Yunusa Mohammed as its new National Chairman following the resignation of Ajuji Ahmed, who has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The leadership change was approved by the party’s National Working Committee and comes amid growing political realignments within opposition ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
Johnson described Mohammed, a former National Organising Secretary of the party from Kaduna State, as an experienced administrator capable of guiding the party through the current political climate.
“The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria People’s Party is pleased to announce the election of Bala Yunusa Mohammed as our new National Chairman,” the statement said.
The party also formally acknowledged the departure of its former chairman and expressed appreciation for his contributions during his tenure.
“The NNPP takes this opportunity to formally acknowledge the departure of Dr Ajuji Ahmed, who has resigned his appointment to join the African Democratic Congress.
“On behalf of our national leadership, the National Executive Committee, and our teeming members, we thank Dr Ajuji Ahmed for his dedicated service. We recognise the contributions he made during his tenure and sincerely wish him the very best in his future political endeavours,” the statement added.
According to the party, the leadership transition comes at a critical period for Nigeria, with rising economic challenges and political tensions ahead of the next election cycle.
The NNPP expressed confidence that Mohammed would help reposition the party and strengthen its internal structures in preparation for future electoral contests.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man. Under the leadership of Honourable Bala, we are not just preparing for an election; we are preparing to salvage a nation,” Johnson stated.
He added that the party believes the new chairman will steer the organisation through the evolving political landscape with integrity and determination.
Johnson also called on party members and supporters to unite behind the new leadership as the party prepares for the political contest leading to 2027.
“The journey to 2027 is a marathon, and the NNPP is now better positioned than ever to cross the finish line as the party of the people,” he said.
