Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership for the second time in three years after a tense goalless draw against Bayelsa Queens in the Super Six finale at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Needing just a point to secure the title, Coach Moses Aduku’s side held firm under pressure to finish top of the standings with 10 points, sealing another remarkable chapter in their rise to prominence in Nigerian women’s football.
The result ensured Edo Queens finished ahead of Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons, who both ended the competition on eight points. Abia Angels followed with six points, while FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels occupied fifth and sixth positions respectively.
The triumph marks Edo Queens’ second league title in three seasons, following their maiden championship in 2024, and further establishes them as one of the dominant forces in the domestic women’s game.
Their latest success also secures qualification for the WAFU-B Cup, a regional tournament that serves as a pathway to the CAF Women’s Champions League, offering the team an opportunity to extend their impact beyond Nigeria’s borders.
The club celebrated the achievement in a spirited statement, describing the victory as a “golden final track” in a season defined by consistency and resilience.
Individually, FC Robo Queens’ Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named NWFL Premiership Player of the Season for her standout performances throughout the campaign.
Abia Angels goalkeeper Fatima Okolo was recognised as Goalkeeper of the Season, while Rivers Angels received the Fair Play Award for exemplary conduct during the Super Six.
The Golden Boot award was shared between Rivers Angels striker Abasiofoh Uwah and Edo Queens forward Atume Doorsuur, both finishing the season with 13 goals each.
The achievement sparked widespread praise from Edo State leaders. Governor Monday Okpebholo described the victory as a reflection of discipline, consistency and excellence, while also hailing the team as an inspiration to young girls across the state.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment, noting that Edo Queens’ success reflects the impact of sustained investment in athletics.
Former Edo State Deputy Governor and National Institute for Sports Director-General, Philip Shaibu, also commended the team, describing their triumph as proof of the strength of women’s football in Nigeria and the importance of continued investment in sports development.
Edo Queens’ latest title confirms their evolution from emerging contenders to established champions, as they continue to build a winning culture in domestic women’s football.
With continental competition now ahead, the team shifts focus to representing Nigeria on the regional stage, carrying both expectations and ambition as they aim to extend their dominance beyond national borders.
