The PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs move to St. Louis as the top 50 players battle for 30 places in next week's season-ending TOUR Championship.

The 2026 BMW Championship is set to begin on Thursday, August 20, at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, with the world’s leading golfers competing for a place in the final event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs.

Only 50 players remain in the playoffs, and the pressure will be intense throughout the four-day tournament. When the BMW Championship finishes on Sunday, only the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings will advance to the season-ending TOUR Championship at East Lake.

Among the biggest names in the field are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy. Scheffler enters the tournament in excellent form after producing a dominant performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last weekend.

Scheffler Arrives as the Man to Beat

Scheffler comes into the BMW Championship with enormous confidence after winning the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs by eight shots.

The American finished the tournament at 17 under par and ended a 203-day wait for his next PGA Tour victory. His performance was particularly impressive because he produced a course-record-equalling 61 during the tournament.

The victory also strengthened Scheffler’s position at the top of the FedExCup standings.

He is now looking to continue that momentum at Bellerive, where he will be one of the main favourites to win the tournament.

Scheffler has already won the BMW Championship before and is among the former champions hoping to become only the second player to win the event twice. The official tournament website lists Scheffler, McIlroy, Justin Rose and Justin Thomas among previous winners seeking another title.

His recent form means the rest of the field will have a major challenge if they want to prevent him from adding another trophy to his collection.

McIlroy Looking for a Response

While Scheffler arrives in St. Louis after a spectacular victory, McIlroy has a very different objective.

The Northern Irishman endured a difficult return to competitive golf at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing 66th out of 68 players at eight over par.

McIlroy admitted afterwards that he was struggling with his swing and felt far from the level he needed to reach. The tournament was his first competitive appearance since the Open Championship nearly a month earlier.

Despite the disappointing result, McIlroy remains safely inside the top 50 and will have another opportunity to improve his game at Bellerive.

The four-time major champion is still chasing another FedExCup title and will hope to find his rhythm before the playoffs reach their final stage.

His pairing with Xander Schauffele during the opening round will attract significant attention, particularly because McIlroy will be eager to put last week’s poor performance behind him.

Only 30 Players Can Survive

The BMW Championship is different from many regular PGA Tour events because there is no traditional cut after the first two rounds.

Instead, all 50 players will compete across the four rounds, with their FedExCup positions changing according to their performances.

The biggest prize for many players is not necessarily the BMW Championship trophy. It is a place in the top 30.

Those who finish inside the top 30 after Sunday’s final round will qualify for the TOUR Championship at East Lake, which begins on August 27.

Players near the qualification line therefore face enormous pressure. A strong week could move a golfer into the final 30, while a poor performance could bring the season to an end.

Big Names Already Eliminated

Several well-known golfers will not be taking part in St. Louis after failing to finish inside the FedExCup top 50.

Among them are Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Shane Lowry.

Spieth finished 52nd in the standings despite finishing tied for 19th at the St. Jude Championship. He needed a stronger result to remain in the playoffs but ultimately missed the required position.

Their absence demonstrates just how difficult the FedExCup Playoffs have become.

Even highly experienced players can see their seasons end after a single disappointing week.

Bellerive Provides a New Challenge

The BMW Championship will be played over 7,448 yards at the par-70 Bellerive Country Club.

The tournament carries a $20 million purse, with $3.6 million going to the winner.

The course is expected to provide a demanding test, with thick rough and tree-lined fairways creating additional challenges for players who miss their targets.

That could make accuracy particularly important throughout the week.

Players will also need to manage their games carefully because there is no opportunity to recover through a missed cut. Every shot can affect their position in the FedExCup standings.

What Fans Can Expect

The BMW Championship promises to be one of the most important tournaments of the 2026 PGA Tour season.

Scheffler will attempt to maintain his extraordinary momentum after his eight-shot victory in Memphis, while McIlroy will be looking for a much stronger performance.

Behind them, 48 other players will be fighting for the same objective: finishing high enough in the standings to secure a place at East Lake.

The tournament begins on Thursday, August 20, and runs through Sunday, August 23 at Bellerive Country Club.

With only 30 places available for the final stage, the BMW Championship is expected to deliver intense competition from the opening round to the final putt.

For some golfers, it will be a chance to challenge Scheffler for another PGA Tour title. For others, it will be a fight simply to keep their season alive.

Either way, all eyes will be on St. Louis as the FedExCup Playoffs move one step closer to deciding the 2026 champion.
