Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles have commenced preparations for their upcoming qualifying fixtures against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the race for a place at the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.

The team began its training programme on Tuesday, October 27, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, under the supervision of head coach Eric Chelle.

According to reports published by Nigerian sports outlets, 28 players participated in the opening training session as the coaching crew began preparations for the important two-legged contest.

The qualifiers represent an important stage in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its U-23 team and maintain its ambitions of competing in major international tournaments.

The Africa U-23 Cup of Nations is also an important pathway for teams seeking qualification for the men’s football tournament at the Olympic Games.

With the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics approaching, Nigeria will be keen to establish a competitive squad capable of progressing through the qualifying process.

Chelle Oversees the Opening Training Session

The opening session was designed to ease the players into the training programme and begin building fitness and tactical understanding.

Reports indicated that the players undertook stretching exercises, muscle-relaxation routines, ball work, passing drills and small-sided games.

The goalkeepers initially worked separately under goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa before the wider training programme continued.

The coaching staff is expected to use the available preparation period to assess the players, improve their understanding of the team’s tactical requirements and establish combinations across the different positions.

Preparation will be particularly important because the qualifiers involve two matches, requiring the team to perform consistently rather than depend on a single result.

Nigeria must also ensure that its players remain fit and available throughout the build-up, especially as some of the selected footballers are involved in domestic and continental club competitions.

Squad Availability and Club Commitments

The opening session also reflected the demands of coordinating international preparations with club football.

Premium Times reported that Rangers International players Chimobi Igwilo, Kenneth Igboke and Chibueze Oputa were excused from the session following their return from Algeria, where they had represented the Enugu-based club against MC Alger in the CAF Champions League.

Their situation illustrates the scheduling challenges that national-team coaches can face when players are involved in multiple competitions.

Clubs must manage their own fixtures and player workloads, while national teams need sufficient time to prepare for international assignments.

For the Olympic Eagles, the coaching staff will need to monitor player fitness and integrate returning players into the team’s preparations as the qualifying fixtures approach.

The squad includes players from several Nigerian clubs, offering the technical crew an opportunity to assess talent from different teams and develop a balanced group.

However, the final effectiveness of the squad will depend on how quickly the players build understanding and adapt to the coaching staff’s approach.

DR Congo Present an Important Test

The Democratic Republic of Congo will provide a significant test for Nigeria as both countries seek progress in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying competition.

Two-legged qualifiers require teams to manage both home and away performances carefully. A strong result in the first match can provide an advantage, but the return fixture can change the overall outcome.

Nigeria will therefore need to approach the contest with discipline, concentration and an effective tactical plan.

The midfield will have an important role in controlling possession and linking defensive and attacking play. The forwards will need to convert scoring opportunities, while the defence must remain organised against counterattacks and set pieces.

The technical crew will also have to consider substitutions, player fitness and tactical adjustments as the tie develops.

At this stage, the precise outcome of the qualifiers remains uncertain. The opening training session marks the beginning of the preparation process rather than a guarantee of success.

Road to the 2027 U-23 AFCON and Los Angeles Olympics

The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is a major competition for emerging African footballers. It provides young players with international experience and gives coaches an opportunity to evaluate talent for future senior national-team assignments.

For Nigeria, a successful qualifying campaign would help maintain the country’s presence in an important development pathway.

The competition also carries added significance because of its connection to Olympic qualification. Teams must first negotiate the continental qualification process before they can pursue places at the Olympic Games.

Nigeria will therefore need to approach each stage carefully and avoid becoming distracted by the wider ambitions attached to the tournament.

The team’s immediate objective is to prepare effectively for DR Congo, establish the right balance across the squad and deliver strong performances over both legs.

Consistency Will Be Key for Nigeria

The opening training session in Ikenne represents the first step in a preparation programme that will test the players’ fitness, tactical discipline and ability to work together.

Chelle and his technical crew will be expected to make the most of the available sessions while assessing the strengths of the squad.

Nigeria’s prospects will depend on how well the players respond to training, adapt to the tactical plan and execute it under competitive pressure.

The DR Congo tie is an important opportunity for the Olympic Eagles to demonstrate their potential and move closer to qualification for the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

For now, attention remains on training, squad preparation and the task of producing a competitive performance when the qualifiers begin.
