The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has urged political actors to avoid violence and embrace issue-based campaigns as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Eno made the appeal on Friday during his third anniversary address to the people of the state, stressing that no political ambition is worth the loss of human life.
“As the political season commences, I urge our people to play politics of ideas and not one of name-calling or character assassination,” he said.
The governor emphasised the need for sportsmanship in politics, noting that elections are temporary but the bonds of unity and brotherhood among citizens must remain intact.
He said his administration has worked to maintain peace in the state, adding that political differences should not divide communities.
“I came as a peacemaker and I will leave… as a peacemaker,” Eno stated, reaffirming his commitment to sustaining stability in the state.
He also reiterated his administration’s slogan of “Akwa Ibom United,” urging residents to remain committed to unity and mutual support.
According to him, his government has kept faith with its promises to govern inclusively and promote harmony among all residents.
Eno further highlighted achievements in key sectors including education, aviation, health, and infrastructure, attributing the progress to public support and collective effort.
He thanked citizens for their prayers and cooperation, saying these contributions have helped shape what he described as the state’s emerging success story.
“From a once rusty backwater subnational, we are fast becoming a destination of choice,” he said, describing Akwa Ibom as a “Land of Promise” experiencing steady transformation.
Political activities have been gradually increasing across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, with repeated calls from leaders and stakeholders for peaceful, issue-driven campaigns amid concerns about rising tension in some regions.
