Christopher Musa has announced that Nigeria will deploy artificial intelligence-powered surveillance systems and advanced anti-drone technology as part of efforts to modernise its defence and security architecture.

The initiative was disclosed during a high-level visit to Monaco and Spain, where the minister led a delegation to conclude discussions on the Multi-Domain Hybrid Intelligence Shield (HIS) project.

According to Musa, the project is designed to enhance border surveillance, improve urban security monitoring, and strengthen responses to emerging and asymmetric security threats.

The system will include AI-driven surveillance platforms capable of detecting and analysing threats in real time using advanced algorithmic processing.

It will also introduce anti-drone technology aimed at intercepting and neutralising unmanned aerial systems that could be used for hostile activity.

The Federal Government also plans to establish national and regional command-and-control centres to improve coordination and ensure faster responses to security incidents across the country.

Musa said the initiative places strong emphasis on technology transfer and local capacity development, including the establishment of a military Centre of Excellence in Nigeria.

He noted that the government would work with international defence technology partners, including Marss UK Ltd, while also building indigenous capabilities.

The project is expected to support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, kidnapping incidents in various regions, oil theft in the Niger Delta, and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Security analysts have long argued that the adoption of advanced technologies such as AI surveillance systems, drones, and integrated intelligence platforms is critical to improving Nigeria’s military effectiveness.

The new initiative reflects a broader shift toward technology-driven security operations aimed at strengthening national defence and improving situational awareness across multiple threat environments.
