Arsenal moved to within touching distance of their first Premier League title in 22 years after a dramatic VAR decision preserved a tense 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side appeared set for heartbreak in stoppage time before a controversial intervention from the Video Assistant Referee changed the course of the title race.

The Gunners had taken the lead in the 83rd minute through Leandro Trossard, whose deflected effort gave Arsenal the breakthrough in a fiercely contested encounter at the London Stadium.

However, chaos erupted in the closing moments when West Ham forward Callum Wilson fired home after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya dropped the ball inside his penalty area.

West Ham players and supporters celebrated wildly, believing they had rescued a crucial equaliser in their fight against relegation.

But the celebrations were cut short after VAR official Darren England instructed referee Chris Kavanagh to review the incident for a possible foul by Pablo on Raya before the goalkeeper lost possession.

Following a lengthy review at the pitch-side monitor, Kavanagh ruled that Raya had been impeded and disallowed the goal, sparking contrasting reactions from both teams.

Arsenal players and supporters celebrated the decision passionately, while furious jeers echoed around the stadium from West Ham fans.

The victory leaves Arsenal five points clear of second-placed Manchester City with only two matches remaining.

Arteta’s men will secure the Premier League title if they defeat Burnley and Crystal Palace in their final two fixtures.

Arsenal could even be crowned champions earlier if Manchester City fail to win their game in hand against Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

For West Ham, the defeat was a devastating setback in their relegation battle.

The Hammers remain one point from safety, while fourth-bottom Tottenham Hotspur could extend the gap to four points if they defeat Leeds United on Monday.

Speaking after the match, Mikel Arteta praised the officials for making what he described as a courageous decision under intense pressure.

“It was a call from the ref that is very brave,” Arteta said.

“When you look at the action in that way, it is an obvious error. It is a free-kick, and the goal has to be disallowed.”

The Arsenal manager added that such moments could shape the history of clubs competing for major objectives.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo disagreed strongly with the ruling, arguing that inconsistent interpretations of the laws continue to create confusion around VAR decisions.

“The way the game finished, we’re all upset of course,” Nuno said.

“Even the referees don’t know what a foul is, what isn’t a foul. It creates a lot of doubt and speculation around it.”

Since its introduction to the Premier League in 2019, VAR has remained one of football’s most divisive technologies, frequently drawing criticism from players, managers, and supporters over controversial decisions and prolonged interruptions.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville described the incident as one of the most significant VAR moments in Premier League history.

“This is an earthquake, a tremor of a moment,” Neville said.

“It is probably the biggest moment in VAR history in the Premier League.”

Whether viewed as justice or controversy, the decision may ultimately prove decisive in determining the destination of the Premier League trophy this season.
