The First Lady of Lagos State, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, alongside filmmaker Funke Akindele, singer Waje, dancer Kaffy, drummer Ara, and vocalist Yinka Davies, has called for greater strategic investment in women as a pathway to strengthening Nigeria’s economy.

The call was made during a high-profile gathering organised by Wema Bank in Lagos to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026.

The event brought together leaders, professionals, and entertainers to highlight the importance of gender inclusion and institutional support for women across various sectors.

Guided by the 2026 International Women’s Day theme, “Give To Gain,” and the sub-theme “When Women Gain, We Grow,” the gathering focused on the role of women’s empowerment in achieving economic prosperity.

In his keynote address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, emphasised that empowering women remains critical to sustainable development.

“The global advocacy for gender equality is a fundamental pillar upon which our collective progress rests,” Oseni said.

He also highlighted global data showing the economic challenges faced by women.

According to him, reports from UN Women indicate that as of 2025, about 10 percent of women worldwide live in extreme poverty, a figure that has not improved since 2020.

“It is projected that by 2030, over 350 million women and girls could still be trapped in extreme poverty,” he added.

Oseni noted that the persistent gap in gender inclusion continues to limit opportunities for women and affects broader societal development.

“This is not because women aren’t working. It is a ripple effect of the gap that still exists in gender inclusion, a dilemma that plagues not just the women but also the society,” he explained.

He stressed that investing in women is essential for economic progress.

“The truth is, investing in women is investing in the economy and society at large. The more we give to women, the more we bridge prevalent gaps and accelerate economic prosperity,” Oseni stated.

During the event, filmmaker Funke Akindele also shared insights into the personal sacrifices required to achieve professional success.

“We are seeing the billions, we are all saying congratulations, and the accolades; Funke is doing a great job. I want to be like Funke, but what it costs me to be sitting here today is a lot. It took my time,” she said.

“When I say ‘my time,’ I mean I didn’t have a life. No party life, no social life,” she added.

The event also featured the SARA Gives to Empower Her Award, which honoured five women making measurable contributions toward empowering others.

Each recipient received a grant to support and expand their initiatives aimed at creating positive social impact.

In addition, Wema Bank presented the He for She Award to five male employees in recognition of their commitment to promoting gender equality and supporting women’s empowerment within the organisation.

The programme concluded with the launch of the Wema Bank Girl Child Journal, a publication designed to inspire young girls through mentorship and guidance.

The journal features contributions from 80 professionals who share insights and reflections aimed at empowering the next generation of female leaders.
