The US Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to regular updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account due to a lapse in US federal appropriations, highlighting the wider effects of the ongoing government shutdown.

In a statement on the platform, the mission said: “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.”

While routine communications are paused, essential services continue wherever feasible. The mission clarified that scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates abroad will proceed as the situation allows.

Travellers and US citizens in Nigeria are advised to monitor official channels closely for any urgent safety alerts during the pause in routine updates.

The announcement follows similar notices from other US diplomatic posts worldwide, illustrating the global impact of the shutdown as of January 31, 2026.
