Tems Says She’s Surpassed Her Music Career Goals

Nigerian singer reveals she has achieved more than she ever dreamed since leaving her 9-5 job.

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has revealed that she has achieved beyond her expectations in the music industry.

The Love Me Jeje singer made the disclosure during a recent interactive session with fans on X. When asked what she is currently looking forward to and whether she had achieved her pre-stardom dreams, Tems responded: “I’m looking forward to whatever the Lord has in store and honestly I’ve achieved beyond my dreams from when I had a 9-5.”

Tems launched her music career after quitting her job as a digital marketer in January 2018. Later that year, she released her debut single, Mr Rabel, which gained some traction. Her rise to prominence, however, came after being featured on Wizkid’s 2020 hit single Essence, which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of the remix with Justin Bieber.

In 2023, Tems became the first female Afrobeats artist to win a Grammy when her collaboration with Future and Drake, Wait For U, won Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. She followed this achievement in 2025 by winning the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, making her the only Nigerian artist with multiple Grammys.

Tems also earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for co-writing Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, further cementing her status as one of Nigeria’s most successful global music stars.
