Defence Minister Assures Protection for Soldiers on Lawful Duty

The Minister’s statement underscores the commitment of the Defence Ministry to safeguard officers while performing their official responsibilities and maintain order within the military.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has assured that the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command will protect every soldier performing lawful duties.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing journalists during a ministerial press conference on the Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration and Remembrance Day, 2026, held at the National Defence College, Abuja.

The assurance followed an altercation on Tuesday between FCT Minister Nyeson Wike and Navy Lieutenant AM Yerima regarding the development of land in Abuja, reportedly belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Gambo.

“At the Ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty,” Badaru said.
“We are looking into this issue and assure that any officer on lawful duty will be protected highly. We will not allow anything to happen to him as long as he is doing his job—and he’s doing his job greatly well.”
