Hundreds of activists, opposition supporters and other citizens marched through the Tunisian capital, Tunis, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, calling for President Kais Saied to step down and demanding the restoration of democratic rule.
The protesters said they rejected what they described as “one-man rule” and expressed concerns about what they see as a decline in political freedoms. Demonstrators also called for the release of jailed opposition figures, activists and journalists.
The latest protest comes amid growing frustration over Tunisia’s political and economic situation. Many citizens have complained about the rising cost of living, worsening public services and shortages affecting daily life. Economic difficulties have added to public anger and strengthened calls for government action.
President Saied’s critics accuse his government of becoming increasingly authoritarian, particularly since his major political moves in 2021, which led to significant changes in Tunisia’s system of government. Rights groups and opposition figures have also raised concerns about the arrest and imprisonment of political opponents and activists.
However, Saied has defended his actions, saying they are lawful and necessary to fight corruption and protect the country.
The protest showed that opposition groups and their supporters continue to challenge the president despite divisions within the opposition movement. As Tunisia faces both political tension and economic pressure, the latest demonstration highlights the growing frustration among sections of the population.
