Liberian authorities have charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering and several other offences as part of an investigation into an alleged transnational narcotics network. The charges were announced on August 19, 2026.
Howard-Taylor, who served as Liberia’s vice president from 2018 to 2024, was detained at Roberts International Airport while attempting to leave the country. She was subsequently taken into the custody of the Liberia National Police as authorities continued their investigation.
The charges include allegations of unlicensed importation, sale, distribution and transportation of controlled substances, as well as criminal solicitation, facilitation, conspiracy and money laundering. These remain allegations that will have to be tested through Liberia’s legal process.
The case follows a major cocaine seizure in Liberia valued at about $317 million, highlighting growing concerns about the country’s role as a possible transit point for international drug trafficking. However, authorities have continued their investigations to establish the full details and alleged connections in the case.
Liberian authorities have also charged three foreign nationals in absentia in connection with the alleged narcotics network and say they will seek to locate and arrest them through domestic and international legal channels.
