The United States is deploying additional troops and warships to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to rise.

According to reports on October 1, the deployment includes about 9,000 additional US troops and seven warships. The force includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group.

The move comes as President Donald Trump has indicated that US military strikes against Iran could resume after the November midterm elections if Washington and Tehran fail to reach an agreement.

The US and Iran have been involved in indirect diplomatic discussions through mediators. Iran has proposed arrangements involving a ceasefire and the phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a major international shipping route. However, Trump has described Iran’s latest proposal as insufficient.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern because disruptions there can affect international oil and gas supplies. A tanker was also reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile while travelling through the waterway, although there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The additional US military deployment could increase the number of American aircraft carriers operating in the region to three. The US official who disclosed the deployment said the increased presence could be in place by the end of October.

The continuing uncertainty has also affected financial markets and energy prices, with investors closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of renewed military action.
