President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the President of Madagascar, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Randrianirina visited Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic engagement between both countries.
The Madagascar leader, an army colonel, assumed office in October 2025 following a military takeover that dramatically altered the country’s political landscape.
He was sworn in shortly after a power shift that saw former President Andry Rajoelina leave office amid political unrest.
Randrianirina had previously led the CAPSAT military unit, which mutinied and aligned with anti-government protesters during the crisis.
Following the developments, the military announced a takeover of governance after Rajoelina was reportedly impeached for alleged desertion of duty.
His emergence as head of state marked a significant turning point in Madagascar’s political history, drawing international attention to the circumstances surrounding the transition.
During his visit to Abuja, Randrianirina met with President Tinubu at the State House for discussions expected to focus on bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
The meeting is part of Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic engagements with African nations aimed at strengthening continental partnerships.
Details of the discussions between both leaders were not immediately disclosed.
However, the visit underscores continued diplomatic interactions between Nigeria and Madagascar within broader African Union frameworks and regional cooperation efforts.
Both countries are expected to explore areas of mutual interest, including governance, security cooperation, and economic collaboration.
Further updates on outcomes from the meeting are expected from the Presidency.
