The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to introduce constitutional amendments that would change Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.

In a statement, the Presidency described the report as a fabricated story attributed to anonymous sources, alleging it is part of a coordinated attempt by “desperate politicians” to incite political tension and destabilise the country ahead of the general elections.

It urged Nigerians to disregard the claims entirely, stressing that the story is “fake news” intended to create disaffection and stir unnecessary controversy in the polity.

The Presidency further clarified that there is no proposal before government or the National Assembly tagged “Project True Federation,” nor any plan to transmit such a bill by December 15.

It emphasised that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a rigorous legal process involving approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly as well as concurrence from at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

According to the statement, such a process cannot be initiated unilaterally by the President or any individual, and must undergo extensive legislative scrutiny and public debate.

The government reiterated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms and efforts aimed at improving livelihoods, rather than engaging in divisive constitutional changes.

Officials also warned that misinformation and politically motivated fake news are likely to increase as the country approaches the 2026 election cycle, urging citizens to verify information before sharing.

The Presidency called on media consumers to remain vigilant and avoid spreading unverified reports that could inflame tensions or undermine national unity.

It reaffirmed that the administration’s priority remains economic recovery, governance reforms, and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians.
